Xbox now requires Australians to prove their age to access games rated 18+, though “games you already own won’t be affected”

Xbox has begun implementing mandatory age verification for users in Australia to access games rated 18+ (R18+) on Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Store on PC, effective late August 2026. The requirement applies to both the Xbox Store and Microsoft Store, and is part of Xbox’s compliance with Australian online safety regulations.

Users will need to verify their age through one of several methods, including email-based verification, providing a credit card, or sharing government-issued identification such as a passport or driver’s license. Microsoft notified affected players via email and Xbox console messages that they may be prompted to verify their age if they wish to access 18+ rated content.

The company emphasized that games already owned by players will not be affected by the age verification requirement, though access to new 18+ games will be restricted unless age verification is completed. Some reports indicate the policy may also extend to New Zealand users.

The rollout reflects broader regulatory efforts by Australian authorities to implement stronger online safety standards and age-appropriate content restrictions in digital storefronts. The verification system is designed to prevent underage access to mature-rated games while maintaining existing access for current owners of such titles.
