YouTube Doubles Requirements To Join Partner Program

YouTube has substantially raised the threshold for creators seeking to monetize through its Partner Program. Starting February 1, 2027, the platform is doubling eligibility requirements for new members wishing to earn ad revenue.

The updated criteria require applicants to reach 1,000 subscribers and accumulate either 8,000 qualified watch hours over the preceding 12 months or secure 20 million qualified Shorts views in the same period. This represents a significant increase from previous thresholds.

YouTube’s decision reflects the scale of its creator economy, with over 3 million creators currently participating in the Partner Program. The company has signaled that it anticipates disbursing greater total payments to creators in 2027 compared to 2026, though it is making entry more selective to ensure quality standards.

The stricter requirements apply only to new applicants; existing Partner Program members retain their current standing. This shift demonstrates YouTube’s evolving approach to creator economics, balancing expanded payouts with more rigorous qualification standards.

For gaming creators and content producers generally, the new thresholds represent a more formidable entry point into YouTube’s monetization system.
