Reforj developer 4J Studios unveils Rixels: modified pixels that reduce texture memory requirements by 98%
4J Studios, the Dundee-based developer behind Reforj, has unveiled Rixels, a novel texture technology that dramatically reduces memory requirements for game graphics. Short for “Reforj Pixels,” Rixels are modified pixels that contain vector shapes rather than traditional bitmap data, allowing them to maintain visual sharpness at any zoom level.
The innovation addresses a longstanding challenge in game development: texture file sizes. Traditional texture approaches require increasingly large resolution assets—such as the 512x512 normal textures 4J Studios was using—to achieve desired visual fidelity. Rixels provide a significant alternative, reducing texture memory requirements by 98% compared to conventional methods.
Because Rixels leverage vector graphics technology, they scale without quality loss, remaining crisp and clear even when viewed up close. This characteristic offers developers greater flexibility in asset optimization and memory management, particularly valuable for performance-constrained platforms or complex scenes requiring extensive texturing.
4J Studios has applied for a patent on the technology, protecting its intellectual property while positioning Rixels as a potential industry development tool. The innovation could have broad implications for game performance optimization across various platforms and hardware configurations.
