As Xbox head Asha Sharma reportedly visits Bethesda HQ, workers put up red flags representing laid off staff and a giant inflatable rat outside

On August 12th, Communications Workers of America union members staged a protest outside Bethesda Softworks’ Rockville headquarters, deploying red flags and a giant inflatable rat to demonstrate against ongoing layoffs affecting Xbox staff. The action coincided with reports that Xbox head Asha Sharma was visiting the facility.

The protest highlighted the scale of job losses within Xbox, with 1,600 workers already laid off and an additional 1,600 facing potential job loss over the coming year. Each red flag planted by protesters served as a symbolic representation of a terminated employee, making visible the human cost of the workforce reductions.

The Bethesda demonstration was a precursor to larger organized action. The CWA has coordinated a series of rallies scheduled for August 18th across multiple locations in the United States and Canada to show solidarity with affected Xbox workers and draw attention to labor concerns within the gaming industry. The inflatable rat, commonly deployed in labor disputes, underscored workers’ frustration with management decisions.

The timing of Sharma’s visit during the labor action created a striking juxtaposition, with management presence and worker dissent occupying the same space on the same day. The protest reflects growing unionization efforts within the gaming industry and workers’ attempts to maintain visibility for labor issues in an industry facing significant consolidation and restructuring.
