2011 The Lord Of The Rings Game Gets Surprise Re-Release Today

Aspyr Media has surprise-released The Lord of the Rings: War in the North as a Legacy Edition across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC. The action RPG originally launched in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC to middling reviews and disappointing sales. The game was developed by Snowblind Studios, which closed in 2012, and had been delisted from Steam in February 2019 before being restored for this re-release.

The Legacy Edition features significant technical improvements, including 60 frames-per-second gameplay, numerous bug fixes, and quality-of-life enhancements such as enemy target locking, the ability to hot-swap between playable characters mid-combat, an improved user interface, and a new autosave feature. The edition is optimized for both solo play and cooperative experiences, supporting both online and local split-screen co-op modes. The game is priced at $17.99 through August 25, after which it will increase to $19.99. The Switch 2 version in Europe will release on August 18, slightly after other platforms.

Set in Middle-earth, War in the North combines elements from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and Peter Jackson’s film trilogy while introducing original characters and storylines. Players control three “Orc-Banes” across its action-focused gameplay, encountering both familiar characters and new figures. The surprise release appears to be part of a broader effort by Aspyr and Embracer to revive older licensed titles.
