‘Overwatch’’s Big Battle Pass Changes For Season 4 Have Fans Celebrating
Blizzard has implemented a major overhaul of Overwatch’s Battle Pass system launching in Season 4, introducing player-friendly changes while maintaining the grind for free currency rewards.
The most significant change divides the Battle Pass’s 80 tiers into shorter, non-linear tracks of 8-10 tiers each, which players can complete in any order. Each track culminates in either a Legendary or Epic skin reward, giving players unprecedented control over which cosmetics they unlock. Despite the structural reorganization, the overall progression time and number of tiers remain unchanged, according to Product Director Chris McCabe. The system also reduces FOMO (fear of missing out) elements from the game’s monetization strategy.
However, the revamp includes a less favorable trade-off: Blizzard has consolidated free currency rewards—specifically 400 Overwatch coins and 30 Mythic Prisms—into the final track, which only unlocks after completing all preceding tracks. This effectively pushes access to substantial free currency to approximately tier 72 in the old system’s equivalency, making the grind for free-to-play benefits considerably longer than before.
The changes arrive amid Overwatch’s busy year, which has already introduced eight new heroes. The Battle Pass rework attempts to balance player agency with monetization incentives, though the repositioning of free currency suggests Blizzard is offsetting cosmetic customization flexibility with increased progression demands.
