Former Rideshare Stimulator Lead Writer Claims They Were Replaced with ChatGPT
Saber Interactive has denied claims from former lead writer Stella Sacco that she was replaced with ChatGPT during the development of its upcoming game Rideshare Stimulator. In a Bluesky post, Sacco claimed that she was replaced midway through development and that all passenger voices in the game were also AI-generated. She had previously posted in 2023 about being replaced with ChatGPT on another project at the studio.
In response, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch stated that “neither Saber nor Unigine have replaced any writers with AI” for the rideshare driving game, adding that the game’s story was “written entirely by real people” aside from one experimental mode. However, the company acknowledged plans to use AI for dialog generation, justifying the approach by noting the game’s design requires an infinite number of passenger interactions.
Rideshare Stimulator, announced last month, puts players in the role of a rideshare driver for companies like Uber or Lyft. The game’s announcement trailer also reportedly contains a subtle jab at Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford. Notably, the game’s Steam page currently lacks any disclosure regarding AI use in its development or generation.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions in the gaming industry around artificial intelligence use, particularly concerning its impact on human workers in creative roles. While Saber defends its practices and clarifies its AI implementation, Sacco’s account raises questions about transparency and disclosure standards for studios deploying AI tools during game development.
