Steam is Getting an Absurd New Vampire Survivors Clone in 2 Weeks
Indie developer Messhof, known for Nidhogg and Wheel World, is launching Blood Dungeon, its interpretation of the “bullet heaven” roguelike genre, on Steam on August 25. The game joins a rapidly expanding market of titles inspired by Vampire Survivors, which became a surprise indie phenomenon by combining simple, meditative gameplay with roguelike progression systems.
Vampire Survivors sparked the “bullet heaven” subgenre through its trance-like experience—players spend hours navigating waves of enemies, collecting upgrades and power-ups in a loop so engaging that extended play sessions pass almost unnoticed. The game’s success has prompted numerous developers to explore the formula, creating titles like Brotato and Megabonk, each attempting to add unique mechanics and personality to the established template.
The announcement of Blood Dungeon reflects both the subgenre’s cultural cachet and its commercial viability, attracting established developers alongside indie teams. However, the growing number of Vampire Survivors clones has made differentiation increasingly challenging. Whether Messhof’s entry—leveraging the studio’s reputation for polished, stylish design—can stand out in an increasingly saturated market remains uncertain.
