Epic Games sells ArtStation and Sketchfab to KitBash
Epic Games has divested itself of two major creative platforms, ArtStation and Sketchfab, selling them to KitBash for an undisclosed sum. This marks a significant shift for Epic just over five years after acquiring both platforms in 2021.
The sale reflects Epic’s strategic pivot to concentrate resources on core products: Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite, the Epic Games Store, and its broader developer ecosystem. By offloading ArtStation and Sketchfab, Epic is refocusing its investment priorities toward these key initiatives rather than maintaining independent creative platforms.
KitBash, the acquiring company, is a well-established player in the 3D digital asset space with over a decade of experience in the creative community. The company operates KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla, platforms known for providing artists with comprehensive asset libraries, design tools, animation capabilities, and workflow technologies. These existing operations position KitBash well to manage the acquired platforms.
KitBash’s co-CEO Banks Boutté emphasized the company’s commitment to continuity, stating that KitBash intends to “protect what users value most about each platform.” This messaging suggests an effort to reassure existing users that the platforms will maintain their core value propositions under new ownership.
The transaction represents consolidation within the creative tools industry, with a specialized player acquiring two platforms previously held by one of gaming’s largest companies.
