Take-Two won’t reveal raw GTA 6 preorder numbers because it doesn’t know what they mean: ‘It’s just never happened before’

Grand Theft Auto 6 has achieved “unprecedented” preorder sales volumes according to publisher Take-Two, yet the company has declined to reveal specific numbers publicly. When asked by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier about why the figures aren’t disclosed, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the preorder volume is so unusual that the company cannot reliably interpret what the data means for the game’s eventual commercial performance.

Zelnick stated that Take-Two is unable to determine whether the preorder count can be accurately used to estimate total launch sales figures—a situation the CEO characterized as unprecedented in the company’s history. This uncertainty stems from the sheer volume of preorders, which apparently defies historical precedent to such a degree that traditional sales forecasting models no longer apply.

The statement is notable given that GTA 6 has yet to receive an official gameplay trailer, suggesting the preorder surge is driven primarily by brand recognition and anticipation for the franchise’s long-awaited sequel. The game has generated considerable cultural interest despite minimal official gameplay footage being released to the public.

Take-Two’s hesitation to disclose concrete preorder numbers while publicly characterizing them as “astonishing” is an unusual approach to managing investor and consumer expectations. The company’s inability to contextualize its own sales data raises questions about how unprecedented consumer demand actually is and whether new metrics may be needed to evaluate modern AAA game launches in the social media era.
