A forgotten old co-op Lord of the Rings game has been unexpectedly remastered and re-released, and there’s a promise of more to come

Aspyr Media has unexpectedly shadow-dropped a remastered edition of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, a 2011 action role-playing game that had largely faded from public memory. The new Legacy Edition is now available on PC (via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, with Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 releases coming August 18th, priced at approximately £19.

The original War in the North was notable for its three-player co-operative campaign and a parallel storyline following one of Sauron’s servants operating in Middle-earth’s northern regions. The Legacy Edition features a resolution and frame rate boost over the 2011 Xbox 360 original, bringing the game to modern technical standards.

Released under a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, this marks Aspyr Media’s first Lord of the Rings title on current-generation platforms. More significantly, Aspyr has confirmed that additional classic Lord of the Rings games will be coming to modern systems in the future, though specific titles and release timelines remain unspecified.

The re-release represents an act of game preservation, reviving a title that had become largely inaccessible to modern audiences. With multiple Lord of the Rings classics potentially on the horizon, fans of the franchise have reason to anticipate further announcements.
