Harry Potter nerds have forced an undersea cable to be moved to avoid Dobby the house elf’s grave, now runs close to Bronze Age remains instead

An undersea power cable project linking the UK National Grid to Ireland has been rerouted following complaints from Harry Potter fans. The cable was originally planned to run underground at Freshwater West beach in Wales, which served as the filming location for Dobby the house elf’s death scene in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.” After project manager Simon Ludlam discussed the plans in a BBC interview, fans mobilized to protest, expressing concerns that the cable would disturb the location associated with the character’s memorable death. Despite Dobby being entirely fictional, the fan campaign succeeded in pressuring authorities to relocate the cable route.

The new path, however, now runs substantially closer to Bronze Age archaeological remains. The situation highlights an unusual intersection where a filming location tied to a beloved fictional character gained enough cultural significance to influence real infrastructure planning. It also demonstrates the organizational capacity of fan communities to challenge large-scale projects, though in this case trading one historical concern for another rather than fully resolving the impact on the landscape.
