Subnautica 2 now has a beta update branch, letting players try out patches before they’re finished, but beware, your saves won’t carry over
Subnautica 2 has launched an experimental beta branch on Steam, giving PC players an opportunity to test upcoming patches and updates before their official release. Unknown Worlds, the game’s developer, has made the feature available through Steam’s built-in beta testing system, accessible by right-clicking the game name, selecting Properties, navigating to Game Versions & Betas, and choosing the Experimental branch from the dropdown menu.
However, players considering testing the experimental build should be aware of an important limitation: any save games created within the experimental branch cannot be transferred to the main release version of the game. This separation is intentional, as the experimental branch represents work-in-progress content that may differ significantly from the finished product. Unknown Worlds cautioned players that “experimental does often mean just that,” emphasizing the potentially unstable nature of the beta build and advising players that progress made in testing may not persist to the final version.
This beta testing system reflects a common approach among developers to gather community feedback and identify issues before wide-scale deployment, allowing players to contribute to the development process while maintaining compatibility boundaries between unstable test builds and the stable main release.
