2K announces new Vancouver-based AAA studio led by EA veteran

2K has announced the establishment of Small Axe Studios, a new Vancouver-based AAA game development studio owned by Take-Two Interactive. The studio is headed by Aaron McHardy, a veteran of Electronic Arts who spent nearly 18 years as executive producer on major sports franchises including Madden NFL, College Football, and the FIFA series.

The studio has assembled a team of experienced industry veterans, with several key positions filled by former EA staff members. This includes Gary Paterson as head of design, Tom Pan as head of operations, and Mike Thompson as head of engineering, among others. According to 2K’s announcement, Small Axe Studios is focused on developing “2K’s next blockbuster sports franchise.”

While the specific sport has not been officially confirmed, visual assets from the studio’s announcement suggest the project may be a soccer game intended to compete with EA Sports FC. This inference is supported by the presence of senior staff with extensive FIFA series experience on the roster. The establishment of Small Axe Studios represents significant movement of talent from EA to 2K and indicates 2K’s commitment to expanding its sports gaming portfolio.
