More The Lord of the Rings ‘Classic Rereleases’ Are Coming

Classic The Lord of the Rings video games are making a comeback. Developer and publisher Aspyr announced a rerelease initiative for legacy Lord of the Rings titles, with The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition shadow-dropping on August 11. The 2011 action RPG, originally released for PS3 and Xbox 360, marks the first in what appears to be a series of classic rereleases.

The rerelease campaign signals renewed interest in older titles from the franchise’s gaming catalog. Before the modern Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War games defined the recent Lord of the Rings experience, earlier entries like The Two Towers and The Return of the King offered peak mid-2000s action gameplay with hack-and-slash combat that defined that gaming era. These titles had largely become inaccessible on modern platforms, facing licensing and technical barriers.

War in the North, while from a later period, similarly struggled with availability across contemporary gaming platforms. The Legacy Edition rerelease addresses this issue, bringing the title back to players who missed it originally or wish to revisit it.

Aspyr, known for handling legacy game ports and rereleases, appears well-positioned to shepherd these classic Lord of the Rings titles into modern platforms. The announcement suggests a coordinated effort to preserve and make available multiple games from the franchise’s extensive gaming history. The success of War in the North Legacy Edition could pave the way for additional classic Lord of the Rings game releases, potentially including earlier titles that fans have long hoped would return.
