Google Finally Agrees to Refund LOTR Fan After Trilogy Disappeared from Digital Library, but There’s a Catch
A Lord of the Rings fan discovered that all three films from The Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition Trilogy had vanished from their Google Movies digital library without warning. When contacting Google customer support, the user learned that the titles were no longer available in Google’s catalog, effectively erasing them from their purchased collection.
The company initially denied the customer’s refund request, citing a policy that prevents refunds for purchases made more than 120 days prior. This policy left the customer without recourse despite losing access to content they had paid for. The customer’s interaction with a support representative proved unhelpful, with responsibility being deflected to YouTube support.
After the customer posted their experience on Reddit’s Piracy subreddit, public attention prompted Google to reverse its position and agree to provide a refund. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the risks of digital content ownership, where customers can lose access to purchased media at any time due to licensing agreements or business decisions—yet face obstacles in recovering their investment.
