“The most offensive thing we see every time we boot up the game” Halo co-creator takes shots at Campaign Evolved art direction
Marcus Lehto, the original art director and co-creator of Halo, has criticized the art direction of Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved built on Unreal Engine 5. Lehto, known as the “father of Master Chief,” was instrumental in defining the visual identity of the first Halo and its direct sequels.
Lehto’s primary criticism focuses on the appearance of the Halo rings in the game, particularly in the main menu. He argues that the rings look too shiny and new, which contradicts the visual language established in the original game. According to Lehto, Forerunner technology should appear ancient, vast, and tomb-like—bearing the visual weight of “hundreds of millennia of conflict.” He emphasizes that while the structures should be metallic rather than stone, they should not appear polished or contemporary.
This criticism comes amid a challenging launch period for Campaign Evolved. Despite receiving positive reviews, the remake has underperformed commercially on PS5, with older ports of Black Ops 1 and 2 reportedly outselling it by a 16-to-1 margin. The launch has also seen multiple contractor positions terminated. Beyond Lehto’s art direction concerns, players have voiced complaints about mechanical and artistic changes throughout the game, including the apparent absence of PvP content.
