Mattel launches new global studios business to develop games based on its IP

Mattel has established Mattel Game Studios, a new global game development organization dedicated to creating games based on the company’s extensive intellectual property portfolio. The formation of the studio follows Mattel’s February acquisition of 100% ownership of its joint venture with NetEase, previously known as Mattel163, where the company previously held a 50% stake.

The new studio employs nearly 300 professionals across two main hubs: Los Angeles and Hangzhou, China. The team comprises artists, designers, engineers, live operations specialists, and producers working collaboratively on Mattel’s gaming initiatives. Mattel Game Studios will oversee the company’s existing portfolio of mobile games while simultaneously developing upcoming free-to-play titles and releases for major gaming platforms, including Roblox and Fortnite.

This move reflects Mattel’s strategic effort to leverage its iconic toy brands and characters in the gaming space. By consolidating development under a single global studio structure, the company aims to streamline production and create cohesive gaming experiences across multiple platforms. The acquisition of full ownership from NetEase positions Mattel to have complete creative and operational control over its gaming ventures.
