There’s Never Been a Better Time to Log Into Pokémon Go, as the Game Gives Away a Perfect Stat Mewtwo and Master Ball

Pokémon Go developer Scopely is distributing a perfect-stat Mewtwo with a special anniversary background and a rare Master Ball to all players as compensation for controversy surrounding an exclusive in-person event. In July, Scopely held an invite-only celebration in New York City’s Times Square for the game’s 10th anniversary, restricted to influencers, content creators, and press. Attendees received a Mewtwo with perfect Individual Values (100% stats) and a unique background—extraordinarily rare rewards that sparked significant backlash from the broader player community.

The exclusivity of the event and its prizes angered many players who felt the special reward should have been available to everyone. Adding fuel to the fire, some event attendees resold their special Mewtwo variants on eBay for $500 to $5,000, further highlighting the perceived unfairness and creating a secondary market for what should have been an equitable in-game reward.

Scopely’s response is a broad compensatory gesture: the perfect Mewtwo and Master Ball are now claimable by all players at no cost. However, attendees of the Times Square event are excluded from receiving the perfect-stat Mewtwo since they already received one during the original event. Perfect-IV Pokémon, or “hundos,” are extremely difficult to obtain through normal gameplay, making this giveaway genuinely generous. While players were able to encounter Mewtwo in raids during Pokémon Go Fest in mid-July, obtaining one with perfect stats requires extreme luck or countless raid attempts.

This giveaway represents a significant reconciliation attempt between Scopely and its player base, though it comes after considerable damage to community trust from the elite-focused event strategy.
