Roblox Is Now The Target Of A Congressional Investigation: “Children Are Hurting”
The US Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, led by Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin, has launched a bipartisan investigation into Roblox over child safety concerns. In an open letter to CEO David Baszucki, the senators accused the platform of failing to protect children despite marketing itself as a safe digital playground for users as young as five years old.
The investigation centers on allegations that Roblox has become a venue for child exploitation, including grooming, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape, and murder. According to the senators’ letter, police have arrested numerous individuals over the past decade for committing serious crimes against children they met through the platform. Additionally, the platform is allegedly being used to trade child sexual abuse material and facilitate sexually explicit experiences involving minors, as well as to bribe and extort children into producing explicit content.
The senators criticized Roblox for prioritizing revenue and engagement metrics over child safety, despite the company’s repeated public assertions regarding robust safety measures. Roblox responded to the investigation by stating it “looks forward to sharing the facts” with the subcommittee, indicating the company intends to address the allegations during the congressional inquiry.
