Sony Wants to Create an Original Character IP to Rival Hello Kitty — and a Stressed-Out Insomniac Bear Is in the Running

Sony Creative Products, the character IP division of Sony Group, is launching a strategic initiative to develop original characters with universal appeal. The company has established a dedicated team and opened a special event space in Tokyo to create characters that can compete with globally recognized mascots like Hello Kitty.

The ambitious goal is to generate 10 billion yen (approximately $62.8 million) in annual sales by 2030 through merchandise and multimedia centered around these new characters. One early contender is Nemu, a stressed-out insomniac night owl bear character that demonstrates Sony’s commitment to developing distinctive personalities with broad appeal.

This move reflects the enormous commercial success of Japanese character IP, exemplified by Hello Kitty’s enduring popularity worldwide. By establishing a dedicated team and infrastructure specifically for character development, Sony is positioning itself to capture a significant share of the lucrative global character goods market.

The initiative is notably separate from Sony’s gaming business, focusing instead on creating intellectual property with merchandise and multimedia potential. This strategy aligns with broader trends in the entertainment industry where character-driven IP represents a valuable revenue stream independent of traditional media releases.
