Windows 11 is finally on the brink of restoring full taskbar movement — a reversal of one of its most controversial design decisions

Windows 11 users will finally regain the ability to move their taskbar—a fundamental feature absent since the OS’s launch and one of its most controversial design decisions.

For the first time since Windows 95, Windows 11 will allow users to reposition their taskbar to the top or either side of the screen. The feature is currently available in Windows 11 Insider Preview builds, with full rollout expected in September’s Patch Tuesday update. Users in the Release Preview Channel can already test the functionality.

The same update introduces the ability to resize the taskbar smaller, maximizing screen space—particularly useful for smaller displays. The taskbar’s immobility has frustrated Windows 11 users since launch. This reversal represents Microsoft’s acknowledgment that locking the taskbar to the bottom missed the mark, as many users appreciated the flexibility offered by previous Windows versions.
