‘Epic Mickey’ Fans Vindicated With 2027 ‘Oswald’ Series Announcement
Disney announced a new Oswald the Lucky Rabbit miniseries coming to Disney+ in February 2027, with the announcement made by Jon Favreau at D23. The news has delighted fans of the character who had championed Oswald through the Epic Mickey video game series.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit predates Mickey Mouse as Walt Disney’s creation, but Disney did not originally own the character’s rights, leading to the character falling into obscurity. In 2006, Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald through a trade with NBCUniversal, famously exchanging ESPN broadcaster Al Michaels as part of the deal. For nearly two decades following the rights acquisition, Disney made limited use of the character, focusing instead on Mickey Mouse as its flagship character.
The new miniseries represents Disney’s most significant investment in Oswald since reacquiring the character’s rights and marks vindication for Epic Mickey fans who have long advocated for the character’s revival.
