Simpsons creator Matt Groening seemingly lets slip that Hit & Run is coming back

At Disney’s D23 event, Simpsons creator Matt Groening hinted that The Simpsons: Hit & Run may be making a comeback. When asked about the beloved 2003 GTA-style game, Groening stated, “I think the original game is coming back in some form,” before current showrunner Matt Selman quickly interjected with “or not,” attempting to walk back the comment.

Groening’s remarks represent the closest thing fans have had to confirmation of a Hit & Run return in years. The original game, released in 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and Windows, became a cult classic and has remained largely inaccessible on modern platforms despite widespread fan demand for its return.

The exchange between Groening and Selman suggests the creator may have revealed information prematurely. Observers noted that both the tone and body language of the interaction pointed to an accidental disclosure. Selman’s immediate pushback further fueled speculation that some form of comeback—whether a remaster, remake, or re-release—could be in development.

No official announcement has been made by Disney or any involved studios regarding Hit & Run’s status. The game remains delisted from most digital storefronts and unavailable on current-generation consoles.
