Simu Liu Says Sleeping Dogs Movie Has ‘a REAL Path Forward’ Amid Dealmaking With Square Enix

Simu Liu, known for his role in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has provided an encouraging update on the long-anticipated Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation. In a recent Twitter post, Liu stated that the project has “a REAL path forward” and confirmed significant progress has been made.

According to Liu, the production now has a director in place—Timo Tjahjanto, announced in December 2025—and a production company backing the project. The film is actively progressing through dealmaking discussions with Square Enix, the publisher of the original 2014 game, to secure the necessary rights and agreements.

Liu, who is both starring in and producing the adaptation, emphasized the momentum the project has gained. The development of video game adaptations has become increasingly common in Hollywood, with mixed results, but this update suggests the Sleeping Dogs film is moving past the languishing phase that has characterized many game-to-film projects.

The update comes in response to fan inquiries about the project’s status, which had been quiet for some time before Liu’s announcement. With a director and production infrastructure now in place, alongside active negotiations with Square Enix, the Sleeping Dogs movie appears to be transitioning from early development into a more concrete production timeline.
