Intel might be cooking up a budget-friendly handheld chip but I’d still be surprised if it’s cheap enough or fast enough to matter

Intel is reportedly developing a budget-oriented processor chip for handheld gaming devices, according to hardware leaker Jaykihn. The rumored Panther Lake chip would feature four Performance cores, four low-power Efficient cores, and four Xe GPU cores—a configuration designed to balance power consumption and gaming performance in a compact form factor.

This follows Intel’s earlier announcement of the Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme processors, which were specifically targeted at the handheld gaming market. These efforts signal Intel’s strategic push to compete with existing handheld platforms by offering competitive processors for device manufacturers.

However, industry observers remain skeptical about whether Intel can deliver a truly compelling handheld option. The persistent challenge lies in achieving an optimal balance between cost and performance—Intel’s historical positioning in the premium market makes it difficult to compete on price, while the technical demands of modern gaming create pressure to maintain performance standards. According to commentary in the article, the company would need to significantly undercut existing handheld solutions to capture market share, a strategy that may conflict with Intel’s manufacturing costs and profit margins.
