Kingdom Hearts 4 Lets You Play As The Final Fantasy Universe’s Most Powerful Black Mage

Square Enix revealed new details about Kingdom Hearts 4 at Disney’s D23 Expo, including confirmation that the action-RPG will release in late 2027. The announcement comes over seven years after the previous mainline Kingdom Hearts title, generating both excitement and skepticism among fans regarding whether the release date will hold.

The D23 presentation showcased several new features and worlds. Donald Duck and Goofy will be fully playable characters in game segments set in the Underworld from Hercules, complete with combo attacks like Goofy’s shield-spinning and Donald’s star-shooting. Mickey Mouse has also been confirmed as playable. The game will feature a world inspired by Pixar’s Coco with environments based on Mexican Día de Muertos celebrations.

Given the extended development time and the franchise’s history of delays, fans expressed concerns online about the release timeline. Series co-creator Tetsuya Nomura, co-directing the project, directly addressed these concerns at D23, promising players the game will definitely release in late 2027 with no further delays. Nomura acknowledged seeing speculation about potential delays online but firmly reassured the community that the late 2027 window remains firm.

The expanded character roster and new worlds signal an ambitious entry in the beloved series, though fans remain cautiously optimistic given past development challenges.
