Kingdom Hearts IV Joins Xbox Play Anywhere, Along With Multiple Other Surprises
Kingdom Hearts IV has been confirmed as an Xbox Play Anywhere title following its announcement at Disney’s D23 Event. The game, which carries a late 2027 release window, will be playable on both Xbox Series X|S consoles and the Xbox PC app through a single purchase, eliminating the need for duplicate purchases across platforms.
The inclusion in Xbox Play Anywhere represents a significant convenience factor for fans interested in playing the upcoming sequel across multiple devices. This cross-platform licensing approach has become increasingly established for major releases on Xbox, with over 2,000 supported games now available through the program.
However, the announcement also highlighted an inconsistency within the Kingdom Hearts franchise on Xbox. The upcoming re-releases of Kingdom Hearts I-III, scheduled to arrive in October, do not carry the Xbox Play Anywhere tag. This means players will need to purchase separate versions if they want to play the earlier entries on both console and PC platforms.
The distinction between Kingdom Hearts IV’s cross-platform licensing and the lack thereof for the classic trilogy re-releases raises questions about the reasoning behind differentiated treatment within the same franchise.
