Microsoft is ditching the COPILOT function in Excel before it even launches

Microsoft is discontinuing the COPILOT function in Excel, ending the feature before it exits preview status. Available to Frontier and Insider users since August 2025, the function never reached general availability.

The COPILOT function enabled users to input natural language prompts to perform spreadsheet tasks including text summarization, feedback categorization, and web information retrieval. Despite initial promise, the feature had significant limitations that constrained its practical utility.

Microsoft’s decision to cancel the function after less than a year in preview reflects a cautious approach to AI integration in productivity software. While the feature generated user interest during testing, it apparently failed to meet the company’s quality thresholds or strategic requirements for a permanent Office suite feature. The discontinuation marks an early setback in Microsoft’s efforts to embed AI capabilities directly into Excel workflows.
