Scientists Name New Lizard Species After House of the Dragon’s Syrax

Researchers have discovered a new lizard species in Thailand and named it after Syrax, the dragon ridden by Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon. The species has been scientifically classified as Acanthosaura syrax and is known as the Syrax mountain horned dragon.

The discovery was made in Mae Wong National Park in western Thailand at an elevation of 4,396 feet, where eight small mountain horned dragons were found. Members of the Acanthosaura genus are characterized by a ridge of enlarged scales along their bodies.

This naming choice exemplifies an emerging trend among scientists to reference popular culture when designating newly discovered species. By drawing connections between fictional worlds and real biological discoveries, researchers aim to generate public interest in wildlife and biodiversity. The practice bridges entertainment and science, potentially fostering greater awareness of conservation efforts and the ongoing discovery of previously unknown species. The new species serves as a tangible link connecting fans of House of the Dragon with the natural world and scientific advancement.
