Saber Interactive adds AI disclaimer to Rideshare on Steam; CEO Matt Karch apologises to former lead writer
Saber Interactive has added a transparency disclosure to Rideshare Simulator’s Steam page following controversy over the use of AI in the game and the dismissal of a human writer. The disclaimer clarifies that the main campaign story, characters, and dialogue were written by a team of human writers, with AI tools used only for voice generation and some localization work.
The dispute arose after former lead writer Stella Sacco claimed she was “replaced with ChatGPT,” sparking criticism of the studio’s decision and broader industry discussion about AI’s impact on creative workers. CEO Matt Karch initially responded publicly with insults before later apologizing privately to Sacco. Karch acknowledged he was “triggered by certain later comments and shot first and thought second about how to respond,” expressing regret for his hasty reaction.
The added disclaimer notes that the optional Free Ride mode—separate from the main campaign and skippable—includes AI-generated passenger missions and localized dialogue, while the core narrative remains human-authored. This distinction demonstrates Saber Interactive’s attempt to clarify where AI was and wasn’t used in development. The disclosure represents an effort to address transparency concerns and restore trust following the public controversy surrounding both the writer’s dismissal and the CEO’s initial response to allegations.
