Gameplay footage for the cancelled Star Wars: Magellan has appeared online
Gameplay footage for Star Wars: Magellan, an action RPG developed by Echtra Games, has surfaced online following the studio’s closure in 2025. The game was never officially announced by publisher Zynga, but footage and artwork uploaded by a former developer reveals details about the cancelled project.
Set to be a AAA action-RPG experience, Magellan would have allowed players to assume the role of iconic Star Wars characters, including a Jedi or Mandalorian, fighting through hordes of enemies in a third-person perspective. The game featured a loot-centric design similar to Borderlands, with defeated enemies dropping gear and equipment of various rarity levels. Each playable character possessed a dedicated skill set and selection of weapons.
Beyond combat mechanics, the game was designed to include an “NPC Bond” system, enabling players to form deeper relationships with non-playable characters. Development began in 2021 at the San Francisco-based Echtra Games, with assistance from NaturalMotion. The studio, founded by former Blizzard developers, had previously released Torchlight 3 in 2020 before being acquired by Zynga. Despite the acquisition, Echtra Games never shipped another completed project before its closure.
The emergence of Magellan footage highlights the challenges facing the video game industry, where numerous unannounced projects are cancelled annually without public knowledge. This rare glimpse into a cancelled Star Wars title demonstrates both the ambitious scope of games in development and the risks studios face when backing unproven concepts or facing financial pressures.
