Crunchyroll Store Removes Tons of Physical Products After Being Locked Behind Subscription

Crunchyroll has significantly reduced its store’s inventory, removing the majority of physical media from its platform as of August 19. The store no longer carries manga, light novels, manhwa, or danmei — a dramatic shift from its previous catalog offerings.

The changes represent the latest in a series of store overhauls by the Sony-owned anime streaming platform. In July, Crunchyroll restricted store access exclusively to Mega and Ultimate Fan tier subscribers, effectively creating a paywall for purchases. The latest removal of physical media inventory continues this shift in strategy.

Currently, the Crunchyroll Store maintains only 387 items in its “Home Entertainment” section (DVDs and Blu-rays), down substantially from its previous range. The company has repositioned the store to focus on merchandise and exclusive drops, signaling a move away from traditional physical media sales toward branded collectibles and limited-edition products.

The changes have frustrated users on social media, who expressed concern about the reduced selection and accessibility of the platform’s shopping features. This restructuring reflects broader industry trends as streaming platforms evaluate their retail operations and prioritize monetization through premium subscription tiers and exclusive merchandise releases.
