I modded GTA 5’s NPCs to be punishable for their crimes, and also much more polite

A PC modder is undertaking a daily series to improve Grand Theft Auto 5’s non-player characters (NPCs) by installing community mods. Using “NPC Check On Player” and “NPCs Get Wanted Stars,” the modder aims to create more sophisticated NPC behaviors that approximate the advanced AI Rockstar Games has promised for Grand Theft Auto 6.

The first mod makes Los Santos citizens more realistic and polite—for instance, they exit vehicles appropriately. The second introduces accountability by allowing NPCs to receive wanted stars for committing crimes, adding consequences to the virtual world. This project reflects community anticipation for GTA 6’s enhanced NPC systems, which Rockstar has touted as featuring nearly human-like artificial intelligence.

By systematically modding GTA 5, the developer is effectively bridging the gap between the current generation’s capabilities and what the next generation promises to deliver, while introducing new gameplay mechanics that add depth and consequence to player interactions.
