Horizon 3 Only Has a ‘Tiny Team’ Working on It at Guerrilla, Reportedly Still Years Away
The next mainline Horizon game from Guerrilla Games remains years away from completion, with only a small team currently working on planning the single-player title that will continue protagonist Aloy’s story from Horizon Zero Dawn (2017) and Horizon Forbidden West (2022).
According to a Bloomberg report, much of Guerrilla’s development resources have been allocated to the studio’s multiplayer spinoff, Horizon Hunters Gathering, which was originally announced in February. However, the online co-op action game is undergoing significant changes following negative feedback from playtesting sessions. The project is being rebooted with a more traditional cooperative multiplayer focus, a reduced scope, and the removal of live-service elements that were previously planned.
The overhaul of Horizon Hunters Gathering reflects broader struggles at Sony Interactive Entertainment with its live-service gaming strategy. The restructuring of the multiplayer title represents a strategic shift as the publisher reassesses its approach to live-service games in the current market.
With the bulk of development attention on the multiplayer spinoff’s redesign, the next single-player Horizon entry will likely not see release until the 2030s. The minimal team currently assigned to the mainline sequel’s pre-production suggests that full-scale development remains some time away.
