Horizon Hunters Gathering is reportedly no longer a live service game following negative feedback

Guerrilla Games is overhauling Horizon Hunters Gathering, its live-service multiplayer spin-off, following negative feedback from playtests conducted earlier this year. According to Bloomberg reporting, the game is being rebooted to remove all live-service mechanics and shift toward a more traditional co-op multiplayer experience with a story mode and significantly reduced scope. The rework has been underway since June 2026.

The project team has been given a December 2026 deadline to impress PlayStation executives with progress on the redesigned game. If expectations are not met, development could be terminated. As part of the overhaul, several developers on Horizon Hunters Gathering are being reassigned to other PlayStation projects that will also face evaluation at year-end, while a smaller team continues work on the next mainline Horizon single-player game, which remains years away from completion.

The game, announced in February 2026 as a cartoony spin-off compared to Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, was originally planned to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC following its closed playtests. The reboot represents a significant shift in PlayStation’s approach to live-service gaming, reflecting broader industry concerns about live-service model viability and player reception.
