$1,000 Consoles Could Have This Dramatic, Negative Effect On Gaming – Report
Ampere Analysis, a market research firm, has raised significant concerns about the potential pricing of next-generation gaming consoles. According to an August 17 report, if Microsoft and Sony launch Xbox Project Helix and PS6 at the rumored $1,000 price point in 2028, the financial consequences could be severe for both companies.
The analysis suggests that launching “conventionally designed, incrementally improved” consoles at $1,000 could result in nearly a 40% drop in sales over five years, potentially costing the industry billions of dollars. Component shortages and rising manufacturing costs are cited as key drivers behind these inflated price projections, creating a significant challenge for hardware manufacturers transitioning to new generations.
However, the report isn’t entirely pessimistic. Ampere Analysis identified three potential strategies that could help Sony and Microsoft keep prices below $1,000. Microsoft has already signaled willingness to pursue alternative approaches, with executive Asha Sharma indicating plans to “innovate” in console design and strategy.
The pricing dilemma reflects broader industry challenges in balancing technological advancement with market viability. The $1,000 price point represents a potential threshold beyond which console adoption could suffer significantly, threatening the gaming ecosystem that has historically relied on affordable hardware to drive software sales and player engagement.
