Subnautica 2 Patch Adds Buddy System, Dev Reveals Glimpse at Early Access 2 Update

Subnautica 2’s Early Access 1.2 update launched on August 19, introducing the Buddy System—a suite of multiplayer-focused features designed to enhance co-op gameplay. The update adds Proximity Chat, an in-game voice communication system that simulates realistic distance-based audio. As players move farther apart, voices transition to a radio-like effect that progressively breaks up, creating immersion in the underwater survival game. Additional features include Player Trading, allowing cooperative resource exchange, Revives to bring downed teammates back into action, and a new Tracking Tag for better player coordination.

Creative director Anthony Gallegos detailed the update in an accompanying video presentation, walking players through each feature’s functionality and design philosophy. The additions represent Unknown Worlds’ first iteration of proximity chat for the game.

Alongside the update, Unknown Worlds announced a $100,000 donation to The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization dedicated to ocean conservation. The donation reflects the studio’s continued commitment to environmental advocacy. Unknown Worlds previously supported ocean conservation efforts when the original Subnautica launched, donating a portion of proceeds to The Ocean Cleanup on World Environment Day in 2019. Executive producer Fernando Melo stated the company remains dedicated to protecting the ocean, which serves as the thematic and inspirational foundation for the Subnautica franchise.
