2XKO Is Ending Active Development Very Soon
Riot Games announced on August 20 that 2XKO, its free-to-play League of Legends fighting game, will end active development in December 2026. The decision comes less than a year after the game’s initial launch, citing insufficient player retention to sustain continued development.
The game launched in early access on PC in October 2025 and expanded to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in January 2026. Despite initial interest and involvement in competitive events like Evo 2026, the studio determined that player adoption and retention rates were insufficient to justify ongoing support. Riot stated: “while a lot of you jumped in to try the game and there’s an incredible community that plays every day, we haven’t seen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability.”
The shutdown follows a prior round of layoffs six months earlier, when approximately 80 developers were let go due to the game not reaching necessary momentum levels.
To ease the transition for players, Riot has committed to several measures. All remaining gameplay content will be released by September 2026, including two final new champions—Lux and Samira. All champions will be unlocked for free, and players will receive refunds for any purchases made during development. Importantly, online servers will remain active beyond December 2026, maintaining player access. The game will also continue to be playable offline on all platforms.
While the cancellation represents a significant setback for Riot’s fighting game initiative, the preservation of online servers and offline functionality demonstrates an effort to maintain accessibility for the existing player base. The decision reflects the challenges of sustaining free-to-play live service games in the competitive fighting game market, even with backing from a major publisher and the considerable brand recognition of the League of Legends franchise.
