Changing From 3 Players To 4 Was A Bigger Challenge For Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 Than You Might Expect
Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 is significantly expanding upon its 2021 predecessor by transitioning from a three-player co-op structure to a four-player cooperative model. According to narrative director Jake Kriegman, this seemingly straightforward upgrade has proven to be a far more substantial design challenge than might be expected.
The shift to four-player gameplay was driven by player feedback on what was missing from the original Aliens Fireteam Elite. Kriegman explained that the team’s focus was on delivering “what players wanted from AFE that they didn’t get,” indicating the four-player format represents a direct response to community demands.
This change sets the sequel apart from most games, as few franchises have successfully operated on both sides of the three versus four-player divide. Moving between these player counts required rethinking core design elements beyond simply adding an extra slot. Developers had to rebalance gameplay mechanics, redesign encounter structures, and adjust team dynamics to accommodate the expanded squad size—a process that demanded substantial architectural revisions to the co-op framework itself.
As part of its broader expansion, Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 aims to deliver a more comprehensive experience across multiple dimensions, with the four-player co-op structure representing one of the most fundamental changes from the original formula.
