Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Finally Has A Release Date, And Netflix Has More Anime On The Way
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the acclaimed anime prequel to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, has been officially confirmed for a second season with an October 2026 release date. Netflix announced the news at Anime NYC, unveiling a new trailer and promotional images alongside the release window.
The trailer introduces four new characters who will take center stage in Season 2: Roman Carax (a young film enthusiast obsessed with analog media), Weak “King” Kingsley (a veteran Edgerunner voiced by Clancy Brown), D, and Talia Yang. The footage highlights the gritty dystopian setting of Night City, showing the protagonists facing dangerous assignments and internal struggles—including King’s battle with cyberpsychosis, a recurring theme in the Cyberpunk universe.
The original Edgerunners series, which debuted in 2022 through Studio Trigger, became a critical and commercial success. It played a significant role in revitalizing interest in Cyberpunk 2077 after the game’s notoriously problematic launch. By delivering compelling storytelling and emotional depth, the anime spin-off proved to be Netflix’s anime crown jewel and demonstrated the franchise’s broader appeal beyond gaming.
Netflix’s Anime NYC showcase also featured announcements for other upcoming projects, including the second season of Blue Eye Samurai and the steampunk Western series Bass X Machina, reflecting the streaming platform’s continued investment in animated content. The company has positioned anime as a key pillar of its entertainment strategy, securing exclusive shows to compete in an increasingly competitive streaming landscape.
