‘Dude no joke looks like Hugh Jackman now’: The internet is swooning over Gabe Newell’s svelte new look at The International
Gabe Newell, founder and managing director of Valve, recorded a welcome video to kick off The International 2026, the premier annual championship tournament for Dota 2. Rather than focus solely on the competitive spectacle, the internet’s attention was drawn to Newell’s noticeably improved physical appearance, with viewers commenting positively on his slimmer and healthier look.
Social media reaction has been enthusiastically positive, with users praising the transformation and some drawing comparisons to actor Hugh Jackman. The response has been characterized as “pleasingly wholesome,” representing a rare moment of widespread encouraging commentary around a gaming industry figure.
The International remains one of the world’s largest esports tournaments, drawing millions of viewers globally and featuring substantial prize pools. While Newell’s appearance in the kickoff video is an annual tradition for Valve, the focus on his personal wellness rather than the tournament itself reflects the internet’s tendency to create unexpected talking points around major gaming events.
