After that Sensor Tower-AppMagic deal, VC firm Gem seeks veteran founders, first movers and indies

VC firm Gem Capital is actively seeking founders with proven track records, first-mover advantages, and high-potential independent developers for upcoming investments. The firm recently benefited from a major exit when Sensor Tower acquired AppMagic, a portfolio company Gem had backed early.

According to co-managing director Kirill Gurskiy, Gem’s investment thesis centers on identifying market gaps before competitors do. The firm spotted such an opportunity with AppMagic, which filled a specific need for analytics tools tailored to small and medium-sized businesses—a gap Gurskiy noted no one else had built for at the time.

Gem has applied this first-mover strategy to other portfolio companies, including Skich, a Cyprus-based alternative app store that launched before the EU’s Digital Markets Act compelled Apple to open its ecosystem to competing platforms. Skich recently secured a payments partnership with Xsolla, establishing a flat 15% commission rate for developers to improve creator economics.

Gem Capital’s renewed focus on experienced founders who have already shipped products reflects broader venture capital trends emphasizing execution capability and proven market traction over purely speculative bets. The firm’s success with AppMagic demonstrates the potential returns from backing early identifiers of market needs.
