You Don’t Have To Like Golden Axe To Enjoy The New Animated Series’ Trailer
Sega and Paramount+ are reviving the classic arcade franchise Golden Axe with an upcoming animated series, premiering all ten episodes on September 16, 2026. The show marks a significant return for the 1989 arcade game, which has remained largely dormant since 2008’s Golden Axe: Beast Rider.
The animated series follows the three legendary heroes—Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead—as they reunite to defeat the recurring villain Death Adder and save the land of Yuria from evil forces. The cast features voice performances from Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre, and Matthew Rhys. The show introduces a new character, Hampton Squib, an inexperienced adventurer whose ambitions exceed his abilities, forcing the heroes to work together despite their flaws.
The series is co-created and executive produced by Mike McMahan, known for Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Joe Chandler from American Dad, who serves as showrunner. The creative team has taken a comedic approach to the adaptation, blending action and humor with the beat-’em-up spirit of the original games. The first trailer showcases combat, magic, and meta-humor alongside the adventuring that defined the arcade classic.
This Paramount-Sega collaboration aims to introduce the long-dormant franchise to both nostalgic fans and new audiences unfamiliar with the original games. The series will be available exclusively on Paramount+.
