CoD: Modern Warfare 4 Aims For Fast And Fluid Movement, But A Classic Mode Isn’t Off The Table

Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is launching its first multiplayer beta this weekend. The studio, returning to the franchise after developing Modern Warfare 2’s 2022 reboot (with Modern Warfare 3 handled by Sledgehammer Games), has emphasized advancement in movement mechanics as a core focus for the new installment.

In interviews ahead of the beta, multiplayer creative director Geoff Smith and technical designer Jack Hoppus detailed the team’s commitment to “fast and fluid” movement. The multiplayer suite includes standard 6v6 maps, large-scale Ground War modes, and smaller 2v2 Gunfight encounters. Recognizing that the Call of Duty playerbase has historically divided on how the franchise should feel and play, developers are also considering the addition of a classic-style mode to accommodate different preferences.

Game balance has emerged as a critical design priority. Multiplayer design lead Jacky Reynolds noted that the average Call of Duty player has become significantly more skilled over the franchise’s lifetime. This evolution in player capability has prompted Infinity Ward to rigorously test gameplay systems to prevent exploitation of overpowered items and weapons, ensuring balanced competition across skill levels.
