Xbox Reportedly Makes Up Less Than 5% Of US Physical Sales In 2026

Circana, a video game industry analysis group, has released data on US physical gaming sales for 2026, revealing a stark divide in how players across different platforms are purchasing games. According to the report shared by Mat Piscatella, Nintendo’s platforms have achieved overwhelming dominance in the physical sales market.

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 account for 63% of all physical gaming sales in the US in 2026, while PlayStation captures 32% of the market. PC has secured a small portion through special edition releases. Xbox’s share of physical game sales remains negligible at just over 4%, encompassing both Xbox Series X and Xbox One.

This data illuminates significant shifts in consumer purchasing behavior across gaming ecosystems. The massive Nintendo advantage in physical sales suggests that players still buying physical games remain heavily concentrated in the Switch ecosystem. PlayStation’s 32% share indicates meaningful continued demand for physical media among its player base, while Xbox’s minimal presence suggests the platform’s customer base has largely migrated to digital purchasing.

The report raises important questions about the future of physical game distribution. With Xbox barely registering in the physical market and Nintendo commanding roughly two-thirds of sales, the industry may be approaching a critical inflection point where physical media becomes increasingly irrelevant for major platforms. This trajectory could accelerate the industry’s shift toward disc-less consoles and fully digital distribution models as manufacturers evaluate their hardware and software strategies.
