Famed Studio Is Officially Making a Comeback After Xbox Layoffs

Double Fine Productions has officially announced its comeback following its departure from Microsoft. CEO Tim Schafer revealed the studio’s plans via the Kinda Funny podcast, unveiling a Kickstarter campaign for Amnesia Fortnight 2026, the latest iteration of the studio’s legendary game jam series.

The “Amnesia Fortnight 2026 - Indie Reboot” campaign launches August 31st and runs through September. In a unique community-driven model, Kickstarter backers will vote on which game concepts are developed into four playable prototypes. Following development, backers will vote again to determine which prototypes advance into full, albeit smaller-scale, games.

This marks a significant moment for Double Fine, known for developing the acclaimed Psychonauts series. The studio’s return to independent game development through crowdfunding represents a major shift from its years under Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios banner.

The campaign will be documented by 2 Player Productions, the same studio behind the critically praised Psychodyssey documentary. This partnership emphasizes transparent development, allowing fans to follow the creation journey from concept through completion.
