Don’t tell Nintendo, but I turned GTA 5 into Pokémon Go using a mod

A PC Gamer modder has embarked on an ongoing daily project to transform Grand Theft Auto 5 into increasingly experimental versions of itself, including a Pokémon Go-inspired modification. The series documents daily modding sessions with the goal of either creating a PC equivalent of GTA 6 or intentionally breaking the game entirely. The week-long experiment has provided insights into game design and physics systems. One key observation has been the contrast between GTA 5 and GTA 6’s narrative design—while GTA 6 centers on a Bonnie-and-Clyde love story between its protagonists, GTA 5’s characters Franklin, Michael, and Trevor experience Los Santos in isolation, typically driving solo through the city. This loneliness in GTA 5’s design suggests fundamental differences in how the two games approach their protagonist dynamics. The modder has also discovered quirks in the game’s physics systems, including unpredictable behavior when objects are struck by vehicles traveling at supersonic speeds. The project demonstrates both the flexibility of GTA 5’s modding community and the creative potential for reimagining established games through community modifications.
