Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 Is An Exciting Return To Metal Gear’s Past

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 marks the long-awaited return of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to playable form on modern gaming platforms. After being confined to PlayStation 3 for nearly two decades, MGS4 is making its debut on Xbox for the first time, while also arriving on PC and Steam Deck.

The collection’s headlining title is MGS4, the 2008 epic directed by Hideo Kojima that represents perhaps the strangest and most divisive game in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Known for its self-indulgent storytelling and extremely long cutscenes, it has nonetheless been recognized by reviewers as a fascinating and prescient work worthy of rediscovery. The new remaster presents the game in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second—a significant visual upgrade from the original PS3 version that reportedly runs well on PC and mostly on Steam Deck.

Beyond MGS4, the collection includes Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in its HD Collection version and Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel, the franchise’s first handheld title. These titles represent Solid Snake’s “weirdest, non-canon, and final adventures,” offering players a comprehensive look at the latter chapters of the series.

The Master Collection is generating positive reception ahead of its release, with reviewers praising the opportunity to experience MGS4 on modern platforms despite its flaws. While the package can be purchased as a complete collection or with individual games sold separately, the full collection includes bonus content that makes it the more compelling option for fans. This release represents a significant moment for game preservation, finally breaking MGS4 free from its decade-long platform exclusivity.
