Game Freak Says Pokémon Champions Protects Classic Turn-Based Battles
Game Freak has emphasized the importance of Pokémon Champions in preserving the traditional turn-based battle system that has defined the franchise for three decades. The company’s commitment to classic battling mechanics was detailed in a new YouTube development series featuring Shigeki Morimoto and co-director Kazumasa Iwao.
According to Iwao, the development team spent considerable time deliberating how to evolve Pokémon’s battle system while recognizing that turn-based combat has become increasingly less prominent in recent Pokémon titles. In response, the team designed Pokémon Champions as a way to give players access to the traditional turn-based battling experience that has remained central to the franchise’s identity since its inception 30 years ago.
The decision reflects Game Freak’s awareness of player interest in classic gameplay mechanics, positioning Pokémon Champions as a dedicated experience for those seeking the foundational turn-based strategy that established the series.
